Australia's captain Set to Play a Key Part in the Ashes

Pat Cummins bowling

Pat Cummins has claimed over 300 dismissals in 71 five-day games with an average of 22.10.

Australia's chair of selectors George Bailey has declared that captain Pat Cummins will play a "major part" in this winter's England-Australia contest.

Rumors had circulated that the 32-year-old might miss the series due to a persistent back stress problem that was still troubling him.

Previous updates from team management suggested no final decision had been made regarding Cummins' participation, with the five-Test series set to start on 21 November in the WACA.

Bailey expressed that Cummins is "building up" and remained hopeful about the prospects of taking part.

"We know that time is getting short and there are permutations around that, not just his injury, but additional elements," Bailey remarked.

"The outlook is good. There's strong faith that he'll participate in a significant role. With luck from the opening match. Otherwise, we'll reassess."

Injury History

Cummins was ruled out Australia's limited-overs series against India and New Zealand recently after examinations confirmed a lumbar bone stress.

Previous incidents include of spinal problems, with flare-ups in several earlier campaigns forcing him out of three Australian summers in a short span.

Cummins stated he would be bold in recovery efforts in his comeback strategy to make the squad for the Ashes.

The selector indicated that it was unclear if he had started his bowling workouts as part of his rehabilitation but acknowledged it was "becoming urgent" for him to be fit for the opener.

Contingency Plans

If he's unavailable, veteran batsman Smith will take over the captaincy.

All-rounder Cameron Green was recently pulled out from Australia's squad for their ODI contests against India as a preventive step because of an abdominal issue.

The selector characterized it as a "minor" injury and mentioned that he'll feature in the domestic first-class competition, so will be "well-prepared to resume bowling."

"Extensive planning has gone into creating the schedule for him to participate for the opening match as an dual-role player," the selector detailed.

"His involvement was limited to the initial matches anyway. How he handles the cricket bat in white-ball cricket, if it causes any delay for a short period, the choice was made to approach this more conservatively."
