Trumpism's most illuminating and characteristic instances – not its most important, nor most brutal, nor most threatening, nor most senseless, but possibly its most revealing – emerged earlier this harvest season. Over the span of several weeks, the nation's leader commenced revealing everyone his intentions for a gilded ballroom double the dimensions compared to the White House and subsequently started unilaterally ripping down the East Wing portion to erect it.
He has performed deeds 10,000 times as bad – the current estimate of fatalities due to his slashing to USAID amounts to 600,000 and growing, and recently a study projected his fossil fuel policies would kill another 1.3 million. Yet nothing as characteristic. No former leader would have risked – really, no former commander would have imagined – independently wrecking significant portions of the presidential residence to construct a palace-inspired entertainment space, with the enthusiastic participation of some of the richest Americans, almost all of whom have business with public institutions.
We went from 'the humble will receive the Earth' to 'the meek shall die of cholera'
As confusing as it is to watch the leader try to upend the traditional concept of democracy and exchange it with its complete opposite, there is one large group within America who wouldn't consider it completely novel. That encompasses people such as ourselves – within elder demographics almost a majority – who were brought up as mainline Protestant Christians.
We have watched throughout the years while conservative evangelical congregations turned the Jesus we were raised with into exactly the opposite of who we understood him to be. Fundamentally, they converted a persona of love into a symbol of animosity who approves exactly the harshness that he criticized in the Gospel; this has happened at a slower pace, through multiple decades as opposed to months, but it is nonetheless disconcerting via comparable methods, a bewildering emotional blow for many of us.
A Damaging Christianity Establishes Itself
Therefore allow me to outline the Christ from my upbringing, because theoretically the Savior is the core within Christian belief, and since the fastest-growing cadre of Americans may possess limited understanding regarding him as they consider themselves skeptics or doubters or religiously unaffiliated. I take no issue with any of these traditions, nor with different religions; but I do think that exist valuable insights of significant worth in the Christian story.
It is emphatically not the narrative of an authoritative monarch appearing; rather, a baby is born to displaced parents in an automotive shelter, who need to rapidly escape to a different country to avoid undercover officers. The infant develops in simple surroundings, an employed craftsman; his message concerns compassion for others, particularly for the disadvantaged – not merely emotional affection, but a concrete one, shown by providing food and sheltering. The Savior's reaction to hostility is to offer the opposite cheek – not as an act of compliant endurance, but as a method to teach the attacker; his approach to wrongdoing indicates that whenever an individual takes your jacket you should give the person your additional clothing also.
The obvious and straightforward reality that the Jesus in biblical accounts calls for a kind of profound affection centered on the impoverished has consistently rendered the Christian faith somewhat of a controversial faith: attractive to the masses, but due to its natural unconventionality needing to be controlled. In the fifties it was contained through watering down – Protestant Christianity was so prevalent that it practically blessed current circumstances.
A Battle for the Finest Within Us
So I have been encouraged to observe the steadfast resistance to Trump develop in this past year. It has been significant comfort to assist in constructing the campaign that has protested openly via continuous gatherings, and appears to have motivated electorate to participate in numbers in the off-year elections. We will need to persist with it, and with identical determination, displaying national flags at every demonstration and appeals to the highest qualities within national heritage.
We're going to be asked ... how did you receive the immigrant? Did you receive him and welcome him or refuse?
The country is optimally secured, to put it differently, through connection to the finest about American history, similar to Christianity is most protected by relationship to that which renders it distinctive and wonderful, which is the example of Christ. In all circumstances does it imply feigning the most damaging regarding America and Christian faith did not happen; it represents both humility and conviction, a blend that genuine American Christians should embrace.
